Wallets

A wallet is a single-currency balance within your Verto account. Each account — whether a parent account or a sub-account — can hold multiple wallets across different currencies simultaneously. You can also hold multiple wallets in the same currency within the same account, which is useful for segregating funds by purpose, product line, or client type.

Wallet behaviour is the same whether you are operating at a parent account level or sub-account level, though currency availability may vary depending on your account type and corridors.

The default wallet

The first wallet created for a given currency on an account becomes the default wallet for that currency. The default wallet is used for specific platform actions including billing and post-funded FX deals. Subsequent wallets created in the same currency are standard wallets and do not affect the default.

Wallet nicknames

When creating a wallet, you can assign a customerReferenceLabel — a custom nickname for internal identification. This is useful if you want to reference wallets by a meaningful name within your own systems rather than by wallet ID.

Holdable vs non-holdable currencies

Not all currencies can be held in a wallet. Verto supports two currency types:

Holdable currencies — wallets can be created and balances maintained. Verto
currently supports wallets in 25+ currencies including USD, EUR ext.

Non-holdable currencies (Inline FX) — these currencies can be purchased via
FX and paid out to a beneficiary in a single step, but cannot be held in a wallet.
INR is a common example — you can convert USD to INR and pay out to an Indian
beneficiary, but you cannot hold an INR balance. Other examples include EGP, ETB,
GHS, BDT, PKR, IDR, and others.

Not all payout or FX currencies support wallet holding. Contact your account manager [email protected] or to confirm
which currencies are available as holdable wallets for your account. A full

Moving funds between wallets

Within the same account — instant

Funds can be moved between wallets on the same account instantly, whether between
different currencies (via FX conversion) or within the same currency. Same-currency
wallet-to-wallet transfers settle immediately with no processing delay.

Between Verto accounts — real time

Payments between Verto customers are supported and settle in real time, typically within 5–10 seconds, 24/7. Transaction monitoring is applied to these payments as with any other external transfer, so payments may occasionally be held for review.

See the FX guide for details on converting between wallets across currencies, and the Funding Wallets guide for details on receiving external funds into a wallet.

Checking wallet balance

Before initiating a payment or FX conversion, use the Get Wallet endpoint to confirm your wallet has sufficient funds. This is also useful if you want to surface live balance data within your own product UI.

Key limitations

  • Non-holdable currencies cannot be stored in a wallet — they must be purchased and paid out in a single Inline FX transaction
  • Currency availability varies by account type and commercial setup — confirm with your account manager before building against a specific currency
  • PARTNER_REFERRED sub-accounts cannot sweep funds to the parent account by default — see the Sub-accounts guide for details
